Simple living decisions

It’s always important to make time to reflect and try to figure out what next for the next few months. Whether you are trying to live a much simpler life or just trying to live, taking time out is key to surviving and being happy.

For me, I had a first full quarter with my new team and new strategy which has worked well, I have closed off a menacing issue that has been going on for the last three years of my life, and I have managed to relinquish and extra business activities which were causing unnecessary pressure.

Now I feel like I am finally in a mental and healthy position to enjoy life again and plan for the upcoming year. Yes, it’s nearly 2019 … can you believe it?

No matter what comes to play over the next few weeks and months, I know for a fact that I will continue to follow living a simple life - learning to live without rather than never being satisfied and wanting. My focus will now be back on my home and family.

How am I doing or starting this?

  • continue to clean and throw out things that our family do not need or have not used in over a year

  • stop buying commercial cleaners and making my own (I so love this and the house smells amazing every time I use my new homemade cleaning products)

Over this coming week, I am going to start planning our meals and grocery shopping again. I haven’t been doing much real cooking lately and I kinda miss it! I’ll share how that goes with you in a few weeks.

Home made cleaning products

So today I finally got my act together and starting cleaning my house with homemade cleaning products.

It actually started a few weeks ago, when I began using Eucalyptus oil and water to clean my floors, both timber and concrete. I was sick of buying cleaning products, going through them really quickly and then having to buy more products all over again. Not to mention the waste, but the cost of cleaning was and required shelf space to store was increasing. So much for my drive to live simply!

I always have eucalyptus oil on hand (great to put in steam to drive away colds and the winter lurgy), with it’s great anti-bacterial properties, I thought why not just start using it to clean the floors. It works wonders! Just mix with some water, spray or pour on the floors and mop away. It also leaves the house smelling divine and fresh.

After searching on the internet for homemade cleaning products and a trip to my best friend Chemist Warehouse, I came home with a few items to help me get started on my cleaning concoctions.

The following is an Apple Cider based General Cleaner which I put together and have just used to clean my bathroom and kitchen. I’ll look to use it for the whole house, once I get the motivation to clean again :-)

General Cleaner

In a spray bottle, mix equal parts apple cider vinegar and boiled water.
Add a few liberal drops of eucalyptus oil.

Shake well and clean away!!!

New studio and new direction for 2018

As we reach the end of 2017, I am trying to slow back down and reflect on achievements and learnings for the year passed. Needless to say, it's been crazy and hectic.

I started a new pottery studio with two others (Deb Taylor and Agatha Pupaher) in a bid to provide space to the growing number of people in our community interested in this art and craft.

After a few months, however, I discovered that trying to balance running a studio, with work, my own ceramic practice and most importantly supporting my family, was too much. I had all of a sudden gotten 'busy' again and lost sight of why I had made the decisions in my life to slow down a few years ago.

So it was time to break away and go on my own as a ceramicist/potter.

Moving studios will allow me more concentrated focus on developing my skills and growing my business into the future. And I am hoping to share with you some of the new things planned early in the new year.

My new studio also now allows me to spend quality time with my growing son and the rest of my family. As I get older, I realise even more the importance of family. They are the ones who will always be by my side, no matter the circumstances and I have to cherish every moment and opportunity to be with them.

AFL Grand Final Day 2017

Even though I'm a Sydney-sider through and through, I have been addicted to AFL since my son started playing when he was 5 years old. The game is pretty exciting and full on at the best of times. The Swans didn't make it this year, but still I sit with the family glued to the TV watching in anticipation on who will win.

Dinner has been put on hold and we are resorting to eating junk food ... but hey, it is the grand final after all!

Please excuse the brevity of this first post as I'm not used to blogging. Here's hoping that my blogs will get better over time.
